He retired from the Army Reserves in 1950 as a lieutenant colonel. He entered the graduate program in social work at the University of Washington in 1935, but his studies were interrupted by World War II, where he served in the U.S. He then moved to the professional staff of the Multnomah County Public Welfare Department. His long career with county and state government began shortly after graduation from Reed, when he worked on the research staff of the Oregon Governor’s interim Commission on Public Health and Welfare. She married Gordon McNeil in 1957 the couple later divorced. She attended Reed for two years and later spent one year in business college.
